All are free to come and watch and support! Event: FREE
GOT BARz?? Slam Barz is a supportive South Yorkshire wide event for young first time and emerging urban lyricists and rappers (aged 14 to 25) to come and show your skills through an open mic or by competing in a SLAM BARz 2017 challenge. All welcome | no discrimination| no haters | good vibes | supportive atmosphere.
No matter what your experience, we want to hear and support you! You can just do the open mic or give one of the challenges a go.
Hip hop, grime, old school, lyrical word play, all styles welcome. We’re looking for creativity, and inventiveness for our Slam Challenge Autumn special in Oct, not just spraying barz (although there’s room for that in the Open Mic!)
BRING YOUR BEST BARZ TO BE IN THE RUNNING FOR ONE OF THE PRIZES!!
Judges and artists including: GMF, Scumfam, Sean Day and more TBC)
Host: Dominic Heslop, AKA The Devoted1 (Road Runner)
Slam prizes: T-shirts / Vouchers / Studio time / music industry support
Challenges (to work with one of the below 6 instrumentals):
Endz – write a piece about your hood, street, area, side of your town or city. This can be anything – what you and your peers do, what you observe around you, see, hear etc., what you’d like to see change, what’s there, or just anything about your endz (choose instrumental below)
Letter 2 Self – this one is a bit more challenging and requires a bit of self-honesty – but it’s what SLAM BARz is all about. What would you say to a younger you or you now from a different age? What about a future you? What do you want them to know? What advice or insights can you offer? What do you need to tell yourself? Anything goes. This is all about life lessons, experiences and learning curves. Think WISDOM! (choose instrumental below)
Free 4 All – an opportunity to give us your best barz, track, verse, hook, ANYTHING but it must be up there with as your best and it needs to reflect something REAL for you. We’re looking for honesty, rawness, emotion, energy, sharp lyrics and flow. (see instrumental info below)
If that feels like a challenge, hold tight! The deal is, you can only use 1 of the below 6 instrumentals for a particular challenge.
Bryson Tiller – Sorry Not Sorry
Thomas Mellor – Froggy
Styles P – How I Fly
Above the Clouds – Gang Starr
Drake – 4PM In Calabasas
Westy – Adore
Challenge Rules
Use one of the pre-selected beats/instrumentals per challenge
You can enter all 3 challenges if you wish but we advise spending the time getting 1 the best it can be rather than doing 3 weaker ones
Challenges will be judged on – lyrics / flow / energy / presence
IF YOU HAVE ANY INSTRUMENTALS FOR THE OPEN MIC THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE you MUST send us a link to it at least 3 days before the event.
You can turn up and put your name down on the night but to GUARANTEE a slot, contact us via: slambarz@hivesouthyorkshire.com with your name, age and which you’re interested in (open mic / Challenge or both). It’s also a massive help if we know how many we have for each challenge. If you want to use any of your own tracks for the open mic, you need to also send us a link to them 3 days before the event so we are able to have it ready of the night.
